Reclaiming the Environmental Debate: The Politics of Health in a Toxic Culture by Richard Hofrichter,

Reclaiming the Environmental Debate: The Politics of Health in a Toxic Culture by Richard Hofrichter,
An expanding array of toxins poses an increasing threat to public health. But what makes our society a toxic culture are the social arrangements that encourage and excuse the deterioration of human health and the environment. Elements of toxic culture include the unquestioned production of hazardous wastes, economic blight, substandard housing, chronic stress, exploitative working conditions, and dangerous technologies. Toxic culture is also a metaphor for the ways our language, concepts, and values flame debates, ignoring the political conflicts and power relations that influence public health. Reflecting a diversity of voices and critical perspectives, the essays in this book range from critiques of traditional thinking and practices to strategies for shifting public consciousness to create healthy communities. Rather than emphasize policy reform, medical advances, and individual behavior, the essays stress the causes of ill health associated with the production, use, and disposal of resources and, more important, inequality. The contributors include academics, political activists, and artists. Connecting the essays are a recognition of the political and cultural dynamics that influence public health and a commitment to organize against the powerful interests that perpetuate our toxic culture.

The Point of Production: Work Environment in Advanced Industrial Societies by John Wooding,
How do science and politics interact in the definition of work-related injury and disease? How is worker safety affected by the overall power relations within society? The world today faces bewildering new choices about technology use, the organization of work, and methods of production. Far from taking place in a vacuum, these choices have life-and-death implications for working people and communities. This book integrates theory, data, and case examples to analyze workplace health and safety battles and the roles of such key players as labor, public health professionals, management, regulatory bodies, and the state. The book examines the point of production -- where raw materials are fashioned info products -- situating issues of occupational and environmental health within their political, economic, and social context. Providing an alternative to classical economic explanations, the authors also take a fresh new look at the point of production. They critically explore the rationale that guides industrial decision making, and propose ways to ameliorate its human costs.
